U.S. Supreme Court Strikes Down Political Donation Limits

As election season starts anew, the United States Supreme Court’s recent decision in McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission has changed the game.  The Court’s 5-4 decision does not affect the current limit of $2,600.00 per political candidate for individuals, but did find that the prior overall cap of $48,600.00 by an individual contributor every two years to federal candidates violated the First Amendment of the Constitution.  Moreover, the Court found that the current cap on contributions to Political Actions Committees, currently $74,600.00, likewise violated the First Amendment.  To review the Court’s opinion, please see the following link: http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/13pdf/12-536_e1pf.pdf
